I was draining some pasta earlier whilst trying to verbally prise my progeny away from the TV to force some nutrients into his scrawny body when I had a David Byrne moment.
The world stopped spinning momentarily and the words ‘how did I get here?’ leapt into the forefront of my mind.
I’m sure I was a young free spirit careering through the universe with nothing more than a millets rucksack and a tatty leather jacket. Whose body and life am I in? Who is this grown up draining pasta spirals – about to mix in a tomato sauce with finely chopped hidden vegetables to fool his lanky son into eating vitamins?
What happened to the house DJ standing at the decks steering a thousand wide-open minds to hysteria down a path of rhythm and melody? The peasant – earning pennies from day to day – picking fruit and cutting trees and digging potatoes? The fire juggler spinning flaming clubs and burning skin and mouth to astound and bemuse? The biker? The traveller? The gypsy and the wandering fool?
I didn’t trade in those people or compromise my life. I am all of those things still. But right now I’m serving up pasta for me and my boy.
You brought profundity to a whole new level with this post. That’s a nice father-son image you evoked there.
Also… house DJ? Fire juggler? Really? Man, I feel so untalented. All I can do are wiggle my ears and drink a bottle of beer in about five seconds.
The almost-forty epiphany…how did I get here? Have those quite often myself…especially when the v-man catches me playing with his toys.
pssst….surf was cccccoold! today. Whales, sealions & pelicans in the line-up….nice.
Blimey! That’s a bit deep ain’t it?
Don’t worry son you’ll never be grownup as far as I can see.
Of more interest – Lizza can wiggle her ears – fantastic!
Lizza – if you can wiggle and ‘skull a middie’ (as they say in Oz apparently) at the same time then surely that is impressive enough for me…
Nmm – the toys are for the kids? Bugger…
Kpx/DP – further proof…
To stare into the deep abyss of ‘who am I’ is never the easiest thing to do. When I do that myself, I always find it’s useful to have a colander at hand, to break my fall…
Multi-talented, multi-faceted, multi-widgeted: not bad place at all for you to be, I would have thought. A very nice, thoughtful, Monday morning post.
(Err – even if it was written on a Sunday, it’s a nice post to read on a Monday morning,is what I meant. Bloody words. They’re never there when you want them!)
more to the point – what happened to the drug-crazed nudist running around stonehenge trying to steal motorbikes?

Thank you Bill – I know that was hard for you to say…
Tiggz – erm. I just wanted to ‘borrow’ it for a bit…
Tiny toes – you are an arse. But I think you know that already.
PS – nmm – whales? I love whales…
Yes…whales. Two mothers and their calves…plus a couple others…about 100yds outside the line-up. They seem to create an energy in the water….that’s indescribable. Wish I could get closer to them…
I surfed with dolphins a couple of times in NZ. Once with Hectors (the really peeny ones) coming right up under our boards – was goood! Whales would be nice. I’d like to go to Hawaii to see the humpbacks one springtime…
The whale are starting to migrate here in the OBX and are swimming fairly close to shore. Hey you should surf here.
Sorry to surf heist your pasta gig. 😉
We don’t get too many dolphins up here…but I hear reports of people seeing them. Got to surf with some dolphins in Santa Cruz last year….beautiful animals.
Yes, but did you surf today? Yesterday, I was mainly making pasta, tuna and sweetcorn with a bit of basil for my three. With parmesan – and sometimes Red Leicester. Tomorrow, I might spice it up a bit and chop a carrot or two. Maybe not. This rain has to piss off soon.
Love to PQ!! Hope your sofa is comfy…
Nmm – getting surfjacked is fine anytime!
Mr Bum – sounds better than mine. Feel free to swing by and cook dinner. My sofa’s comfy…
